Independence Day of Armenia: A Journey to Sovereignty

Independence Day of Armenia: A Journey to Sovereignty

On September 21, 1991, Armenia declared its independence from the Soviet Union, marking a pivotal moment in its history. This decision was overwhelmingly supported by the Armenian people, with 99% of voters favoring independence during a national referendum. This day has since become a symbol of resilience and hope for Armenians worldwide.

The journey towards independence began earlier, on August 23, 1990, when the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR adopted the Declaration of Independence, laying the foundation for a sovereign state. It was a significant step towards the formation of the modern Republic of Armenia, despite the challenging times that followed, including economic hardships and regional conflicts.

Armenians have a long and rich history, intertwined with that of ancient civilizations such as the Assyrians, Babylonians, Hittites, and Medians. While the modern Republic of Armenia is only a fraction of the historical Armenian lands, it remains a crucial symbol of identity and unity for Armenians around the world.

On this special day, as we celebrate Armenia’s independence, let’s focus on the positive aspects and wish for the prosperity, strength, and stability of our nation. May the leaders and citizens alike work towards the betterment of Armenia, keeping national interests above all else.
