The Importance of Protecting Armenian Legacy

The Importance of Protecting Armenian Legacy

Recently, someone from what is now Turkey—but was once part of historical Armenia—shared photos and videos of an Armenian church, asking if I knew its name. When I identified it, I was surprised to learn that they were familiar with other Armenian heritage sites in the area. However, what they revealed next was deeply unsettling—they were treasure hunters, actively searching for Armenian relics and gold.

It’s disheartening to think that Armenian heritage items, often appearing in global auctions, may come from these kinds of excavations. Even more troubling is the fate of vast areas rich in Armenian history, now controlled by those who not only neglect preservation but sometimes actively work to erase Armenian heritage altogether.

Lately, I’ve noticed an alarming increase in efforts to erase or distort Armenian history through misinformation and falsification. This isn’t just about the past—it’s about our present and future. As an individual, I know the steps I can take to raise awareness and protect this heritage. But this raises a critical question: where are those in positions of authority who are responsible for safeguarding this legacy? Why is there such a lack of action while our history—and our future—faces such disregard?
