In recent years, both internal and external developments affecting Armenia have made the gradual weakening of Armenian statehood increasingly evident. The parliamentary elections of June 2026, together with the political developments preceding and following them, provided yet another illustration of this broader trend. These developments prompted me to examine the issue more closely and to present my analysis publicly.
On June 27, 2026, I recorded and published a video titled «Ինչու՞ է թուլանում Հայաստանի պետականությունը․ պատճառներ և մարտահրավերներ» (“Why Is Armenia’s Statehood Weakening? Causes and Challenges”) on my social media platforms. In this presentation, delivered in Armenian, I examine several of the political, strategic, institutional, and historical factors that, in my assessment, have contributed to the weakening of Armenia’s statehood.

Because the video presentation is available only in Armenian, a number of my English-speaking readers and followers contacted me requesting additional information and an English-language explanation of the issues discussed. In response, I prepared the following English-language overview to make the presentation’s main ideas accessible to English-speaking Armenians, particularly those in the diaspora.
Although Armenian-History.com primarily focuses on Armenian history, I occasionally publish analytical commentary on contemporary political and strategic issues that I believe are important for understanding Armenia’s present challenges and future development. This article and the accompanying video are part of that effort.
The central argument of the presentation is that the weakening of Armenian statehood cannot be attributed to a single event or political decision. Rather, it is the result of multiple interconnected political, strategic, institutional, and demographic processes that have gradually evolved over many years.
The presentation examines the growing impact of external pressure and foreign influence on Armenia’s internal affairs, the long-term consequences of major political developments since Armenia’s independence, shortcomings in public administration and strategic governance, the gradual weakening of national-centered civic and political forces, and the demographic and territorial challenges affecting the country’s long-term resilience.
It further argues that Armenia’s limited territory, population, economic resources, and strategic depth make effective governance not merely desirable but essential for preserving statehood. For a small state operating in a highly competitive and unstable geopolitical environment, institutional weaknesses can directly undermine national security, sovereignty, and long-term stability.
Finally, the presentation emphasizes that strengthening Armenian statehood requires more than responding to immediate crises. It calls for long-term strategic thinking, responsible governance, stronger public institutions, greater national cohesion, and the consistent protection of Armenia’s national interests and state sovereignty. While the challenges facing Armenia are substantial, they are not insurmountable if addressed through effective leadership, strategic planning, and sustained civic responsibility.
Readers interested in a more detailed discussion of these issues can read my full analytical article, “Why Is Armenia’s Statehood Weakening? Causes and Challenges”, published in both Armenian and English on YerevanNow, where these topics are examined in considerably greater depth.
