In May 1919 Kars came under the full administration of the First Republic of Armenia and became the capital of its Vanand province.
In October 1920, Turkish forces took Kars, causing an exodus of Armenians.
After Treaty of Kars (October 23, 1921) Kars region became a part of Turkey.
