Heroic Battles of May 1918: A Struggle for Survival

Sardarapat-Memorial

The heroic battles of May 1918 against the advancing regular Turkish forces, supported by Kurdish units, were not merely about warfare. It was a desperate struggle to prevent the complete destruction of everything Armenian and the annihilation of the Armenian population on historic Armenian lands.

Thanks to a few brave heroes, new massacres, exile, and deportations were prevented. Armenians fought valiantly and secured their right to an independent country, albeit small and weak, on a fragment of their historic lands.

On May 28, 1918, the Armenian National Council in Tiflis declared itself the supreme and sole administration of the Armenian provinces. This marked a pivotal moment in Armenian history, ensuring the survival of the Armenian nation and the establishment of an independent Armenian state.

This day is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Armenian people. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by our ancestors to preserve our heritage, identity, and sovereignty.
